A rare, quiet moment in the morning on palace grounds, between the sun’s warm gaze and the cool shadow of Fall.
Exploring Deoksugung Palace (덕수궁), the smallest of the five palaces in Seoul. Despite its size, Deoksugung is well known for having diverse Korean architecture.

Amidst all the other colourful halls on the grounds stands the plain looking Seogeodang Hall. Because it is not painted, Seogeodang Hall resembles a typical house in the 16th century. Today, it is left intentionally rustic.
The most commonly used flower is the lotus, having its roots in Buddhism symbolism - wonderful flowers though growing in a muddy pool, often equated with enlightenment when in full bloom.
Adding to the diverse architecture you’ll find in Deoksugung are beautiful abundant pine trees seen everywhere on the palace grounds. These trees are often considered as a symbol of noble beliefs and principles in Korean culture.
Taking root on solid rocks and staying green even through snowstorms, the pine tree therefore also symbolizes South Korea’s resilient spirit and character.
Ending the morning with a quick stroll outside the palace on the streets of Jung-gu, Seoul.
Being the first of the series, we thought to start off with a historical palace landmark (Deoksugung, the lesser known and smallest palace in Seoul) and nearby streets.
